Grand River Transit

Service Overview

Grand River Transit provides transit service in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Elmira, St. Jacobs and New Hamburg.

GRT operates conventional buses, an express bus network, busPLUS service for community routes, and door-to-door transit service for riders with disabilities using specialized vehicles.

Grand River Transit was formed by the Region of Waterloo in 2000, assuming the operations of the former Kitchener Transit and Cambridge Transit. Today, GRT operates 70 routes and covers more than 16 million kilometres every year. At the end of 2016, our ridership was 19.7 million per year.

GRT's fleet consists of more than 250 buses and 35 specialized MobilityPLUS vehicles. We have more than 2,500 stops across the region, and more than 560 shelters.

GRT's service is expanding with the construction of a rapid transit network consisting of ION light rail and ION bus rapid transit. Starting in 2018, ION light rail will operate along a 19-kilometre route between Conestoga Mall transit terminal and Fairview Mall transit terminal.

ION bus rapid transit began operation in September 2015, covering 17 kilometers between Fairview Mall transit terminal and Ainslie Street Terminal in Cambridge.
